This article, What the Japs Told Me, are the observations of an American woman in fascist Japan. The writer, Joy Homer, tells of her travels to Tokyo in the early Forties where she was asked to secretly address a few small groups that opposed their nation's conquest of China and silently wished for a republican form of government.

Homer observed that "Japan's democratic fifth column" felt highly intimidated by the regime's secret police, but acknowledged:

...you can't scoff at their inertia despite the fact that they talk much and do little. After all, it took no small amount of nerve to bring me to Japan to speak."
