On Wednesday, August 15, 1945, a French court found Marshal of France Henri Philippe Pétain guilty of Treason. The Marshal was sentenced to death, however at the request of General Charles de Gaulle the sentence was commuted to life in prison.
“Specifically, Pétain was charged with secretly attacking the foundations of the French state and having intelligence with the enemy prior to the fall of France in 1940”
