GI BILL ARTICLE

This small notice reported that the G.I. Bill, having passed Congress, was now enacted into law. This article lists all the original (1944) benefits that were extended to American W.W. II veterans. The readers of YANK were the intended beneficiaries of this legislation and it seems terribly ironic that this news item was granted such a minute space in the magazine.

The GI Bill of Rights was the nick-name for what was originally known in Congress as "The Serviceman's Readjustment Act of 1944", and has been said to have been the last piece of New Deal legislation that ever was passed during the reign of F.D.R.. It has also been said that it was a very nice gift from the World War I generation to the World War II generation, as it was intended to alleviate the difficulty that the Doughboy veterans suffered during the thirties.

No matter how you slice it, few acts of Congress have left such a beneficial mark across the American landscape as this one.
