A History of Licorice -
Both in the Labs
and in the Kitchens

Contrary to common thought is the fact that most of the candies we eat that are touted as being composed of licorice are, in fact, laced with licorice-tasting chemicals – this bothers the candy-purists among us but it leaves more licorice to the lab-rat jockeys who have found that the elements contained within the root can be a benefit to our lives. This article recalls how the ancient Egyptians used licorice and how the scientists of the 40’s and 50’s have harnessed the weed in their innovations.
