Appearing in the pages of a slightly left-leaning New York paper was this obituary of Leon Trotsky (1879 - 1940):

"[Trotsky was] a Jew in a land where racial discrimination reached its height of sadistic refinement, a middle-class intellectual in a world of medievalism and privilege, Trotsky inevitably joined forces opposing the existing regime... In 1898 when nine delegates of the Russian revolutionary movements met at Minsk to found the Social Democratic Labor Party, germ of the later Bolshevik Party, Trotsky was already engaged in underground political activity. The efficiency of the Tsarist police put him in jail for two and a half years, and banished him for four years in the frozen wastes of Siberia."
