The attached eyewitness report covering President Lincoln's visit to the charred remains of the capital of the Confederacy was first read in the June, 1865 issue of THE ATLANTIC WEEKLY:

"Abraham Lincoln was walking their streets: and worst of all, that plain, honest-hearted man was recognizing the [slaves] as human beings by returning their salutations!"
