Lincoln in Richmond

The attached eyewitness report covering President Lincoln's visit to the charred remains of the capital of the Confederacy was first read in the June, 1865 issue of The Atlantic Weekly:

"Abraham Lincoln was walking their streets: and worst of all, that plain, honest-hearted man was recognizing the [slaves] as human beings by returning their salutations!"
