Sad Paris

William Beebe (1877 – 1962) is remembered in our day for exploring the oceans of the world however, as a younger man his study of birds brought him to a war-weary Paris. Four devastating years of war had altered the city and made a profound impression on the young naturalist.

His astute and very moving observations were recorded in the attached essay, A Naturalist in Paris.
