In 1900, Smith College admitted its first Black student, Otelia Cromwell (1874 – 1972). Forty-three years later the students at Smith elected their first Black student body president, Jane White (1922-2011). The daughter of hard-charging civil rights advocate Walter White (1893 — 1955), Jane went on to become to become a working actress, winning an Obie twenty years after leaving Smith. In the attached photo essay, we can learn a little about this minor celebrity as we see her studying and enjoying the company of her fellow classmates.
