"Their [uniforms] were pretty bad. Most of them wore green German field jackets. Many wore old GI pants; some had GI boots. Their [uniforms], which had been deloused before they entrained for Fort Dix, looked as though they had been slept in for weeks. But their spirits did not match their apparel. Not one of them appeared disconsolate, depressed or homesick - at least to us. Among the new PWs the younger ones seemed quicker to laugh. The older ones looked more thoughtful."
