New York Court Rules That Women
Can Smoke in Public

from Hearst's Sunday American, 1917

A short notice reporting on the arrest of three women for smoking in the Times Square subway station. The Georgia newspaper that printed this news item thought it odd that a New York judge saw fit to release them without so much as a fine:

"Women May Smoke In Public, Says Court"

"DATELINE: NEW YORK- It is no crime for a woman to smoke in a public place - in New York. Magistrate Corrigan so ruled today and discharged Mary Driscoll, Edna Stanley and Elsie Peterson, who were arrested for smoking in The Times Square subway station."

In the high fashion world feminine tobacco abuse, these women are like Rosa Parks: let their names live ever more!
