Historians believe that about 1,500,000 Soviet citizens served in the German military throughout the war, many were like these men, placed in an impossible position and forced into volunteer service within labor battalions. Others, like the Cossacks of Siberia, convinced the Nazis of their anti-Soviet leanings and fought against Stalin’s army in hopes of overthrowing the communists and establishing a new form of government. The men in this article spoke longingly of returning to their homeland, unable to imagine that Stalin would put them on trial as traitors and hang them; which is exactly what he did.”
