Vladimir Lenin, Nelson Rockefeller and Diego Rivera
in New York

Shortly after it was revealed to the art patron Nelson Rockefeller that the muralist he retained to decorate the lobby of his New York Building (Rockefeller Plaza) had taken the liberty of painting the likeness of Lenin in the work, letters were exchanged between the two men:

“As much as I dislike to do so, I am afraid we must ask you to substitute the face of some unknown man where Lenin’s face now appears… I am sure you will understand our feelings in this situation and we will greatly appreciate your making the suggested substitution.”
