Clipped from a longer Yank Magazine article about the 1944 presidential election and the widespread disillusionment held by many Black-American voters regarding the failings of Roosevelt’s New Deal:
“…the Negro vote, about two million strong, is shifting back into the Republican column.”
The report is largely based upon the observations of one Harper’s Magazine correspondent named Earl Brown, who misread the tea leaves; as disappointed as many Blacks were with President Roosevelt, they would not desert the Democratic Party until General Eisenhower campaigned for the Presidency in 1952 – and they did so in huge numbers (and then came back).
The group that advised FDR on all matters involving the African-American community was popularly known as “the Black Brain Trust”…
