Of all the service branches during the war, the U.S. Navy was the worst in matters involving racial abuse. So much so that the Negro press corps at the time cautioned young black men about the duplicity of Navy recruiters who would promise them training as radiomen, technicians or mechanics — but then put them to work as stevedores or swab-jockeys.
