In the attached article historian Fletcher Pratt (1897 – 1956) points out that it was General Charles Summerall's unique understanding of artillery that served as the key to his success in battle:

"Never before had an attack been made with more than 125 guns to a division; on this front there were 608 for two [divisions]. To every German machine gun two 75s or 155 were assigned, to every German battery a whole battery of heavies, and all the American guns were warned to keep silent till the attack began."
