Here is an article from THE LITERARY DIGEST concerning the 1922 governor's race in Texas and Oregon. The subject of concern revolved around the fact that both races had popular Klansmen who lost their respective primary's by surprisingly narrow margins:
"The closeness of the vote ought to be a warning...If the Ku Klux Klan insists on entering politics, good citizens must show it the way out."
