Attached is 1921 column from The Independent illustrating all the assorted impediments created for Germany as a result of the Treaty of Versailles.
The short-sighted framers of that agreement could never have envisioned that the post-war Germany they censured and punished could ever evolve into the economically depressed wasteland that would guarantee the rise of Adolf Hitler. Germany’s problems for 1921 involved border skirmishes with Polish irregulars, the Salzburg Plebiscite, famine, inflation, topped-off by burdensome, bone-crushing reparation payments that combined with all the other afflictions only to create more problems.
