Not long after the German exit from Paris, French writer and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre (1905 – 1980) put pen to paper in an effort to help explain what the citizens of that city were feeling throughout the German occupation of Paris:

"...how am I to convey to the inhabitants of countries that remained free what the occupation was like?... Englishmen and Frenchmen no longer have a single memory in common: everything that London experienced with pride, Paris endured in despair and shame."
