Catholic Devotion to Virgin Mary

The attached article first appeared in an American news magazine in 1897 and was written by an anonymous journalist who attempted to explain the reasoning behind that uniquely Roman Catholic piety that places an emphasis on the Virgin Mary. At that time, the United States was overwhelmingly Protestant, a people who have have long believed, and continue to hold that such dutiful obligations to Mary have only served to upstage Jesus.
